Where the regulations bite
Structural carpentry — joists, trimmers, roof timbers — is covered by Part A and sized from span tables, or by an engineer where the loading is unusual. Notching and drilling joists for services is limited to defined zones, and exceeding them quietly weakens the floor.
Staircases are governed by Part K: maximum rise, minimum going, two metres of headroom, and guarding that will not let a 100mm sphere pass. In a loft conversion, fitting a compliant stair into an existing floor plan is often the hardest part of the entire design.
Internal doors in a loft-converted house usually have to be fire doors under Part B, complete with intumescent and smoke seals, and hung so that the gaps are within tolerance — a fire door fitted with sloppy gaps is not a fire door.
Second fix is where the job gets judged. Scribing architrave to an out-of-plumb wall, and getting consistent margins around doors, is what separates work that looks finished from work that merely is.
